The campsite at Thjorsardalur (Þjórsárdalur) is in Sandártunga. You will see a sign by the road leading to the site. This campsite is in a very beautiful area and well situated. Most of the site is covered with trees. Þjórsárdalur is a true hiking and outdoor paradise. There are market hiking trails. Outside the toilets you can find maps of those trails. One can spend days hiking in this area. Thjorsardalur is truly a place to visit during your travel around Iceland.
No electricity is at the site and only cold water. Bathrooms have not heating and no lights. There are no showers, but there is a swimming pool in Árnes for example. One can say that this is just an original campsite like in the old days.
There is no shop or supermarket nearby, the nearest shop and gas station is at Árnes. You will find a restaurant at Árnes as well.

Staying at Thjorsardalur campsite is a good place or a “base” if you plan to drive to the highlands for day tours. Remember to fill up the gas tank if you plan to drive, there are not many gas stations in the highlands.
